The Best Selling Cars in the UK

The United Kingdom is a country full of drivers. British drivers are known for purchasing both luxury and practical cars depending on the market. Unfortunately, car sales in 2020 are a bit lower than what has been seen in recent years and this can likely be explained by the global recession that is taking place.

However, despite the economic slowdown, new car registrations are still taking place across Britain. We have noticed a trend of buyers shifting their purchases to focus more on practical cars such as hatchbacks. We have also noticed a great diversity in terms of brands being purchased.

British brands such as Vauxhall and Land Rover feature prominently on the bestseller list, as do American brands like Ford, Japanese brands like Toyota and German brands like Volkswagen.

Without further ado, here are the best selling cars in the UK for 2020:

1) Ford Fiesta

The Ford Fiesta has been a long time favourite of British drivers. The classic hatchback scores high in terms of practicality, fuel efficiency and comfort. The 2020 model is slightly roomier than previous years’ editions, which gives it a bit more interior space than you would come to expect.

The Ford Fiesta has been near the top of the best seller list for many years, so it’s no surprise to see it reach number 1 in 2020.

2) Ford Focus

It seems like 2020 is the year of Ford as the American automaker has the first and second best selling vehicles in the UK. The Ford Focus is the larger, more spacious cousin to the Ford Fiesta. The Focus is recommended if you have a large family or find yourself hauling a lot of supplies in your vehicle.

Just like the Fiesta, the Ford Focus scores high marks in practicality, comfort and price. This is truly a full size car that is affordable to the average family.

3) Volkswagen Golf

The German inspired Golf has been a mainstay on the UK’s best seller list for years now. It should come as no surprise that this iconic vehicle is the third best selling car in 2020.

The Gold pioneered the hatchback design and it has stayed true to its roots since it was originally launched. The model comes in both petrol powered and hybrid powered, which is something that can’t be said for the Ford Focus.

4) Vauxhall Corsa

At number 4 for 2020 we meet the Vauxhall Corsa. This is the top selling vehicle that comes from a British brand. New for 2020 is a fully electric model that gets over 200 miles of range on a full charge. This new electric Corsa is helping it rise up the list and shifting many people who would otherwise purchase a Fiesta or Golf to the Vauxhall brand.

5) Nissan Qashqai

At number 5 we meet the first sport utility vehicle on the list. The Nissan Qashqai is Britain’s top selling SUV and fifth most popular vehicle. SUVs are becoming more and more popular among British drivers and Nissan is leading the pack in terms of sales.

SUVs and crossovers have become increasingly popular in the United States and now make up the majority of new vehicle sales there. We are curious if we will see that trend come to Great Britain and whether the list of 2021 best sellers will feature far more SUVs than the 2020 list does.

6) Mercedes-Benz A Class

Rarely do you see a luxury automaker rank so highly on the list of best selling cars. However, the Mercedes-Benz A Class is an exception to the rule. This entry level vehicle from Mercedes-Benz includes all of the premium features, luxury finishes and fancy technology that you come to expect from the luxury carmaker.

7) Mini Hatch

Few cars feature as unforgettable of a design as the Mini does. Synonymous with good handling and style, the Mini brand is a mainstay among the most popular vehicles in the UK. The Mini hatchback comes in seventh place in the 2020 list thanks to strong sales in the second half of the year.

8) Toyota Yaris

Toyota claims that the Yaris is the “world’s safest compact car” and we have to give them credit for designing such a safe and practical vehicle. The Yaris is available in petrol, hybrid and electric versions, so no matter what you prefer you will find it. The other reason why the Yaris is so popular is it’s reputation for quality and longevity.
